Event Date
August 05 - 07, 2024
Pastors,
The task of preaching is continually before you. By it you proclaim the promises of God in Christ to the church and the world. Though it is a weekly task, rarely do pastors get the chance to step back to consider the broader task of preaching and receive continuing preparation for the task.
With this in mind, we invite you to join other pastors for a three-day workshop on the task and craft of preaching. It will be led by Dr. Ben Haupt. The topic will center around 'Leading by Preaching'.
In our time together, we will explore how pastors might use the sermon to lead a congregation of Christ’s people. Each participant will be guided ahead of time to write a case study of a situation in their congregation that calls for pastoral leadership. After exploring corporate aspects of preaching as portrayed in the Scriptures and in the history of the church (Augustine, Luther, Walther, etc.), several modern examples of corporately preaching Christ crucified as pastoral leadership will be considered. A robust, fourfold framework for congregational leadership will be introduced to demonstrate a variety of homiletical possibilities. Participants will then apply this approach of preaching corporately to their own case studies. As participants workshop their case studies and explore preaching possibilities, several examples will be given of the sermon’s place in leading the mission, developing new ministries, financial stewardship, helping congregations heal after turmoil, and other common situations in the life of a congregation.
Dr. Haupt is a former professor and vice-provost at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He is now the new Executive Director of Pastoral Leadership Institute.
