Erasmus accused Luther of being outside of the church and having a novel understanding of Scripture. For the last several episodes, Dr. Paulson has demonstrated that Luther was not an alien to the church and, in fact, adequately understood how church history and authority operated. Here, we see Luther stand firm on the reality that belonging to the church is a matter of receiving the Gospel in word and sacrament and not by submitting to the Pope.
