Idolatry (26)
  1. "Hand Made" sounds great, except when it comes to treating something hand made as though it were God. Chad gives a wonderful meditation on idolatry, and Aralyn Macare sings "Human Hands".
  2. Calling on the God’s vengeance, this militant prayer is aimed against the enemies of God and his people.
  3. The prophets of old were right: we do resemble what we revere. Our anthropology is hijacked by materialism. We become just stuff who consume stuff and hope to have enough stuff to make life worth it.
  4. Following him will also mean keeping our eyes locked on him so unswervingly that we don’t have the time or energy to be standing on tiptoes, peeping over fences into other people’s troubles and struggles.
  5. So much religion is all about us getting this or getting that. The God who comes to us in Jesus is all about giving us himself over and over.
  6. Whether we realize it or not, all these online, self-editing actions are nothing more than our admission that we believe that we are so deeply flawed that no one will love us just as we are.
  7. We’re by nature counters. So long as we can add, subtract, multiply and divide something, anything, we have some measure of control and comparison.
  8. If affairs always begin by believing lies, then repentance always begins by believing the truth: the truth that you are in the wrong, the truth that you have a God who loves you in Jesus Christ, and the truth that he and he alone can save you not only from adultery but from every sin that seeks to lead you down the path of destruction.
  9. We want people to notice us, know us, like us, or even hate us. Just please don’t ignore us. Social media is the ego’s dream come true.
  10. We treat the Scriptures as if they’re our literary property to toy with as we please.
  11. We're of little faith. Or rather, we have big faith, but it’s in something else. Our faith is in our ability to control situations, manipulate them to our advantage.
  12. The reason that anyone would choose a heaven without Jesus, or happiness without Jesus, or healing without Jesus, is because he doesn’t mean that much to them to begin with.
