Law and Gospel (10)
  1. We can interpret "be the Church" as either law or gospel.
  2. There is no AA for legalists. At least not officially. But there ought to be, and it should be called your local church.
  3. If you interpret James, as most do, as an encouragement toward proving your faith by your works and then say it is your "favorite" then you are proclaiming that your favorite thing about the Christian faith is the practical outworking, the proving your faith by your works.
  4. God gives us the power and authority to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to burdened sinners who entrust us with their pain, guilt, and defeat.
  5. You are the friend in low places. It’s only from this place that you are free to look outside yourself for the remedy to the issues that plague you and humanity.
  6. When the old Adam hears a command, he hears a prescription. Like a coach drawing up a play so you can win the game.
  7. What the law is powerless to do, Jesus accomplishes for us. Jesus delivers what the law demands.
  8. The gospel is the good news that in Christ we have been given the very righteousness of Christ himself. This means that everything God commands of us is given to us in Christ as a gift.
  9. It is incumbent upon the faithful preacher, looking to see sinners transformed into the image of Christ, to preach a naked gospel.
  10. As sinful humans, we are adept at taking what God gives as gift and making it into a work. Nowhere is this made more evident than in the universally misunderstood doctrine of sanctification.
