Lectionary: Series A (103)
  1. The Holy Spirit is no skeptic. He asserts Christ has been raised from the dead.
  2. Faith trusts that the Lord is as His Word and His Word is as His person and nature.
  3. Get back to the truth about Christ’s resurrection and glorious return and you will not have to sink into the funk of depression or the errors of speculation.
  4. John’s excitement invites his readers to lay hold of this above all else: The lavish love of God.
  5. No slogan encapsulates biblical Reformation theology as well as the one drawn from this verse. It is justification by faith apart from works and if apart from works, then the justification of the sinner is by faith alone, sola fide.
  6. The Passover is about deliverance even more so than the Day of Atonement and, unlike the Day of Atonement, the Passover is about resurrection life, new life.
  7. Get a grip on the reality of your redeemed life, Paul says, your miserable attitude and anxiety bespeaks of unfaithful unbelief. Knock it off! Time for an attitude adjustment. Rejoice, again I say rejoice!
  8. Paul had no credit because the Law could not atone for his sin. It could not render him positively righteous before the face of God, even though it gave him boasting rights before the Law.
  9. This is what faith holds on to, which, despite appearances, transforms us more and more into the likeness of Christ.
  10. The Gospel is not hampered by the faithful preacher or missionary or average Christian’s circumstances. Even prison presents itself as a forum for gospel proclamation and the making of disciples.
  11. God is no respecter of persons. Persons are justified by divine grace alone, through the gift of faith alone, on account of Jesus Christ alone.
  12. We do not want to live by the law of the jungle. We want to live as human beings in an ordered, properly functioning society.
