  1. What might Christians of the Reformation tradition think of claims like these about the nature of salvation?
  2. What the gospel promises is not escape from our humanity, but resurrection from the dead.
  3. Baptism is always valid because no unrighteousness or faithlessness on our part could ify God’s faithfulness.
  4. What Luther is doing in his Catechism is teaching how the gospel is an action of the whole Trinity, not just one of the persons.
  5. Repentance means being cut down by the law’s declaration of judgment. It’s not an activity we do to prepare for grace, but a point of despair worked by God himself.

  7. Predestination is a promising teaching as Paul teaches it in Romans 8. It’s promising when Christ and his work for us are held firmly in hand.
  8. This gospel is not like all other human acts of gift-giving. It doesn’t come with the expectation of a gift in return. His mercy is an unreturned gift.
  9. Terror and even hatred of God are the only things with which divine hiddenness can leave us.
  10. Divine election is nothing other than God’s freedom and power to choose, and He has made His word the instrument by which He makes His choice about you.
  11. What we notice less often is that this same fear wonders about both the efficacy of the Gospel and the Law.
