No matter how great our thirst is, God's abundance not only meets it but quenches it. When we are poor and in need, the Lord is always there to give us grace and mercy without end.
When a cup is full of water there's no possibility that more water can be poured into it. This is the way it is with the Lord's abundant grace and mercy too. There is no more room for another drop of grace and mercy to be added. We can lift the cup and drink as much as we can stomach, but God's compassion will never be drained. His cup will always be full.
No matter how great our thirst is, God's abundance not only meets it but quenches it. When we are poor and in need, the Lord is always there to give us grace and mercy without end. But, when we try to drink from someone else's cup, grace and mercy always run out because, after all, we're only human. Only God can provide all that's necessary for the poor and needy.
That's why the psalmist prays, "Bow down Your ear, O Lord, and hear me. I am poor and needy... But you, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering and abundant in mercy and truth." (Psalm 86:1, 15)
The cup we carry with us through life is always in need of more; more peace, more mercy, more comfort, more strength to resist temptation, more courage to face death, more faith in Christ, and more charity for our neighbor. Likewise, we need help refilling our cup, because, on account of sin, we tend to pour onto the ground what God's put into our cup. This is why we're always thirsty for justice, absolution, protection, and hope.
Our life is brimming with stress, conflict, troubles, heartaches, and sorrow. When we turn to each other for help in slaking our anxieties and suffering, we always end up parched. Nobody can ultimately help us satisfy our daily struggles. Instead, we're left feeling empty, and many times, more frustrated because we quickly drink their cup to the dregs too.
But, faith in Jesus, trusting our Lord and Savior to satisfy our poverty and needs, we will find that which is always present for us and more than we will ever need. In His grace and mercy, our need is fulfilled. The apostle assures of this, when he writes, "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes, He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Jesus pours into us through the Gospel and His gifts of salvation His fullness and His abundant compassion, His mercy, and truth, because we are poor and in desperate need. In Christ, we can be sure that His cup will never run out. His ability to slake our thirst is greater than our misery and His abundance will last into eternity.
