Lectionary: Series A (543)
  1. This pericope has law and gospel, as well as principles of Christian ethic. The effective preacher rightly distinguishes them but also confidently preaches them.
  2. But notice one thing. When Jesus speaks of commands, He does so in the context of love.
  3. He is the one who saves us at just the right time.
  4. The Church follows the admonition to “love your neighbor” because it is their identity in Christ Jesus.
  5. If Easter is about Jesus as the prototype of the new creation, then the Ascension is about His enthronement as the One who rules forevermore on Earth as it is in Heaven.
  6. On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson examine Christ's teaching in John 14 that if someone loves him, that person will keep Christ's commandments.
  7. God does not just allow suffering; He sends it in order that He might strengthen and deliver us. And all of our suffering finds its meaning in the suffering of Christ Jesus.
  8. Even when you are not sure where Jesus is going, you are on the way, because you are with Him: The Way, the Truth, and the Life. Jesus is right by your side.
  9. The Son is the rock or, put differently, Jesus is the Temple of God and, therefore, our one true hope, no matter the persecutions or hardships we may endure.
  10. When the apostles did something, it should beg a question: Does this remind you of anything? The answer will always be, “Yes. It reminds us of Jesus!”
