Lectionary: Series A (543)
  1. On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the parable of the talents.
  2. The surprising thing about our text is just how devoid it really is of gospel. Amos makes it quite clear that the “Day of the Lord” is a day of darkness and NO LIGHT!
  3. Get back to the truth about Christ’s resurrection and glorious return and you will not have to sink into the funk of depression or the errors of speculation.
  4. Rather than ask what bridesmaid we are, Jesus invites us to see what a bridegroom He is.
  5. All Christian preaching is done in view of the eschatological horizon as we proclaim the Lord who will return as the Judge of all in glory who can no longer be contradicted or denied.
  6. On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the parable of the wise and foolish virgins – although Paulson has a suggestion about how we might rename it.
  7. Instead of the miraculous, Jesus gives us the mundane. Why? Because the Kingdom of God belongs to these people.
  8. The best way to get at preaching the Gospel in our text is to compare the prophets and rulers Micah holds before us to Christ, who is not only a better prophet but the prophet’s hope and the prophet “par excellence.”
  9. John’s excitement invites his readers to lay hold of this above all else: The lavish love of God.
