Lectionary: Series C (327)
  1. The Word and the Spirit go together. The Spirit, the breath of God, illumines and makes alive through the Word of God; both written and external, that is, preached and sacramented.
  2. Paul is talking about military-level allegiance here, the strongest kind of allegiance sworn to a king.
  3. Jesus cares about the daily details of ordinary bodies and creaturely comforts, just as He cares about the eternal well-being of our souls.
  4. The book of Ruth wants us to know the wisdom of waiting on the Lord and to trust that the Lord will provide redemption through an heir who will bring salvation.
  5. This ministry of the Gospel, this standing in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, is demanding business and is entirely unsuitable for the weak-willed or those who compromise with the zeitgeist of the day.
  6. The laments of the Hebrews called upon the LORD God to remember His people who are suffering, be faithful and deliver them.
  7. On the one hand, forgiving as Jesus commands us feels impossible. But on the other hand, forgiving as we have been forgiven is the most natural thing in the world
  8. Jesus came to His own people to bridge the rift which exists between humankind and God.
  9. Certainly, Jesus’ parable provides a dire warning for where, not wealth, per se, but obsession with it, will lead.
  10. God did what we could never do. He made a promise that endures forever and is eternally significant.
