Jesus the Rebel Rabbi: Mary, Martha, and Jesus in Luke 10:38-42
When we compare contemporary rabbinic writings with Jesus's interaction with Mary and Martha in Luke 10, we see how he was bucking the rabbinic system of the day. His double repetition of Martha's name is extremely important when viewed in the light of the Old Testament. And in his description of Martha as "distracted," Jesus uses a colorful Greek verb that has its roots in the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Scriptures.
